Mihaela Vasiliu Sandu aka Chlorys, a dreamy Dj/visual artist born in Bucharest this absolute boss shares her fascinating world of music, art, nature and space. A fine creature of the earth, get to know this lovely below.
Hey Mihaela how are you feeling right at this present moment?
I am excited and a bit nervous as I will be travelling to Paris with the Corp Crew for some gigs.
Were you born in Bucharest???
I was born in a small town in Northern Romania & I moved to Bucharest 5 years ago.
Are you close with your family, any siblings?? Would you say they have played a big role in your interests and passion?
I am currently undergoing therapy, so the relationship with my family is a work in process, I am trying to come to terms with some of their difficulties in raising me, in turn i will hopefully get closer to them. My father used to share his love for music, physics & mathematics with me, those things have stayed with me until now.
Have you lived anywhere else in the world, or maybe would like to???
Any jungle, Portugal, Iceland, Aki Kaurismäki’s Finland (although I do tend to romanticize the atmosphere in his movies) & lately, in Jacques Tati’s scenography in Mon Oncle.
Did you study arts? What lead you to these passions?
I did study visual arts, I think a natural curiosity for everything around me and also being from a small town made me susceptible to stimuli that would help me dream/escape the context I was in.
Has art and music always been a big part of your life or were there others things in your life that interested you as a young girl?
As a child, I used to try to get access to books about any topic that was not remotely close from me (in space and time), such as the life of dinosaurs, exotic flora & fauna, the Universe.
If we had 48hrs in Bucharest with you where would you take us?
The greenhouses at the Botanical Garden, the Geology Museum & out roaming the streets.
There is this party series called Queer Night, can you share your experiences and involvement?
A few of my best friends are in charge of doing the Queer Night that has been going on for the past 8 years, a much needed safe space for queer people & community building. I sometimes play at the Queer Night & I try to be part of the community as much as possible.
You are part of Corp, a collective for female musicians and performers, how is the platform going?? Any exciting plans/collaborations on the horizon?
We are going to play some gigs abroad, other than that, we still plan to open up a studio or a space where we could immerse ourselves in many activities, such as parties, listening sessions, jamming sessions, CDJ lessons, etc.
As an avid listener of your beautiful mix series Alien Flora can you describe the motivation behind it?
My main motivation behind it was to play the music I would not necessarily play in a club setting & to pay an hommage to the movie “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”, the one from 1978.
What inspires you on an artistic level? Any specific people in this world that inspire you?
Actually the Bucharest electronic music scene inspires me, I do think we have something special here and I cannot wait to see how this all unfolds.
Describe your morning ritual?
Drinking coffee or some replacement, talking to the plants and playing them some music.
If you could be an animal what would you be and why??
Any form of parasite would suit me.
What’s your star sign??
Cancer and pretty good at it.
If you could be listening to one song right now… what song would you be listening to???
I would be listening to Furniture - Why Are We In Love, somewhere out in space.
What are you looking forward to the most in 2019?
Setting up my own studio & doing some art.
